Do Wood Wedding Rings Last?
While there is no argument that wood rings make for a beautiful and individual choice, many people wonder about the longevity of a wood wedding ring.
With traditional wood rings made entirely of wood, your ring is likely to degrade and wear rather quickly. Wood isn't a non-reactive metal like Titanium or Gold. This means that a wedding ring made solely of wood is probably not the best idea.
Luckily, our range of rings uses a wood-inlay system. This is where thin strips of your chosen wood are laid inside precious metals or other materials like Titanium, Ceramic, or Tungsten.
During the process, after the wooden strip has been added, the rings-smith will apply a special resin over the materials. This resin protects the wood inside your ring from external factors that could degrade it, like water or mold.
Where Do We Source Our Wood?
We have a selection of wooden inlays that are sourced from either whiskey barrels, Sapele wood, wenge wood, ironwood, snakewood, koa wood, or zebrawood. All of our materials are reclaimed or recycled, and by combining all-natural wood elements and precious metals, our environmentally friendly rings will each have a unique tale.
Reclaimed wood is environmentally friendly and sustainable, but beyond that, it also has character and strength.
The United States creates 20 million tons of lumber waste each year. Using recycled wood can dramatically reduce the amount of waste in our landfills. Reclaimed wood is 11 to 13 times more efficient.
We salvage wood from whiskey barrels, old buildings, we use hardwood flooring, joiner beams, barn siding, and structural timbers. Many forests contain these ancient woods that were harvested to near extinction during the industrial revolution, and remaining forests are now protected. This means that the only way to acquire these beautiful and incredibly valuable resources is by reclaiming the wood.
Furthermore, old wood is also up to 10 times denser than modern lumber. This is because modern farming techniques cause trees to grow faster and, therefore, less dense and less strong.
Whiskey-Barrel Wood
We source some of our wood from aged whiskey barrels, the wood that ages whiskey also looks impressive in our rings. The most common material for whiskey barrels is American white oak. This is a prominent hardwood in North America with an ancient history. Some oak trees can live for over 450 years and reach an impressive height. While they are called white oak trees, the color is usually grey, tan, or dark brown. Casks have a beautiful rich golden color and charred black lines. Barrels are fire-roasted, which features a unique pattern sought after by jewelry makers, artists, and furniture makers.
White oak has a closed cellular structure, making it rot and water-resistant. This is why it is used in whiskey and wine barrels as well as in construction. This versatile and durable wood is a perfect choice for your wood ring.
Wenge Wood
Wenge wood is a tropical timber, originating in Africa. It is very dark and has prominent striped patterns. It is commonly used in flooring, staircases, and musical instruments. It is an endangered wood due to a history of exploitation. It is a crime that so much of it ends up on a scrap heap after being removed from old buildings.
Ironwood
Ironwood is a term used for hardwoods with a high density. We spend years creating designs with the wood that we source.
Koa Wood
Koa wood only grows on the islands of Hawaii. It has an honored heritage and is considered sacred. This beautiful wood is admired for its deep rich colors and varied patterns.
Snakewood
Snakewood comes from a small, rare tree in central and South America. It has a deep red color that turns reddish brown when it is exposed to air. The pattern resembles snakeskin, and while it polishes beautifully, it can be challenging to work with as it easily splits. We take the utmost care to mold this impressive wood.
Zebrawood
Zebrawood is used to describe several kinds of stripped woods. It has been traded throughout history and was brought to different parts of the world by the British empire. Legend has it that these timbers are bound to the moon, whose pull creates the wave-like patterns and infuses the wood with cosmic energy.
